Pain Management

Suffering from Chronic Pain?

Millions of people suffer from chronic pain. The current frontline options for care and treatment are the prescriptions of dangerous medications, invasive procedures and surgeries, and imposed limitations to activities of daily living. These approaches don’t address the underlying causes, some of which include musculoskeletal imbalances, soft tissue disturbances and maladaptive body movement patterns that worsen the pain complex.

We all know someone or are ourselves in pain. Imagine a middle-aged man or woman who is slightly overweight, but specifically has a large belly. They have low back pain, which has persisted for years. Their job or daily activities, coupled with their constant pain confines him/her to a sitting often. After seeing numerous doctors, PT’s, chiropractors, etc they are encouraged to have surgery. The actual procedure goes well and they are sent home with pain killers and told they have a recovery time of a couple months. After 2 months, they notice some relief but there still seems to be pain. After some time, the original level of pain has resurfaced and even increased. They are still somewhat overweight and sitting often.

Treating the Root Cause

Surgeries and drugs are treating symptoms. Without addressing the underlying causes of pain- musculoskeletal imbalances and soft tissue disturbances- the common aforementioned treatments most often contribute to a downward cycle of continuing pain and loss of function. Of course surgery can be indicated. However surgery should always be preceded by and followed up with musculoskeletal assessments. At Allies for Change, we do just this. We not only assess client’s musculoskeletal system in depth (link to explanation) but also look at their medical and psychological histories. Simply put, we look at pain through lens of what we call Prolonged Pain Complex.
